Is Tottenham's run of 30 league games without a draw a record? | The Knowledge

19-02-2019 Plus: Old Trafford’s mysterious semi-final snub, back-to-back penalty misses and unused subs. Mail us or tweet @TheKnowledge_GU“Tottenham have currently played 30 consecutive Premier League games without drawing one,” notes Wouter van Dael. “What is the longest ever such league run?”The short answer is that Spurs are Premier League record-breakers, Wouter, but only just. “Bolton previously held this title with a run of 28 games between March and December 2011,” writes James Clarke. “But in the wider context of English league history, Spurs have a long way to go yet. Twenty-nine clubs have had longer streaks without a draw at some point – and seven have gone more than 40 consecutive league games without a stalemate: Birmingham (43 games), Walsall (44), Leicester (44), Bradford Park Avenue (44), Stoke (46), Sunderland (46) and Aston Villa (51). Although it is probably worth noting that Sunderland’s is the most recent of these, coming comparatively recently in 1908-09. The slightly interesting quirk here is that five of these seven draw-less clubs are midlands teams.Season 2017-1830 Apr Spurs 2-0 Watford5 May West Brom 1-0 Spurs9 May Spurs 1-0 Newcastle13 May Spurs 5-4 Leicester Continue reading...

19-02-2019 Wyatt has become England’s key T20 player over the past year or so and attributes her improved performances in limited-overs cricket to relaxation and perspectiveDanni Wyatt has been having trouble sleeping. Not that England Women’s best T20 player over the last year or so was being kept up worrying about her form. Before flying out to India for six limited-overs games over the next few weeks, Wyatt was staying near the National Performance Centre at Loughborough University. Unfortunately her digs were right next to the student union.Still, the way Wyatt has played since a breakthrough innings in Australia a year and a half ago, she could probably not sleep a wink and still hit a match-winning knock. With England in heavy bother at 16 for four in the first T20 of the 2017 Ashes, Wyatt hit 50 off 36 balls and, even though England lost, she was pushed up to open. In the final game of the series she hit an extraordinary 57-ball 100 which levelled the Ashes. Continue reading...

Monaco may regret sacking the man who revitalised the club

19-02-2019 Vadim Vasilyev made Monaco the model of a sustainable, profitable club. But he has paid for their disastrous seasonBy Adam White and Eric Devin for Get French Football NewsUntil recently, mistakes were rare at Monaco. In just five years, the Russian duo of billionaire owner Dmitry Rybolovlev and vice president Vadim Vasilyev led the club from the second tier to the Ligue 1 title. But the club collapsed this season and the owner has now acted, sacking Vasilyev. “Now it is time for change,” said Rybolovlev in a statement on Valentine’s Day. “I have made a personally very difficult decision to release Vadim Vasilyev from his post as vice president and CEO of the club.”Initially appointed as an advisor in January 2013, Vasilyev was quickly promoted to CEO and vice president, becoming the club’s spokesperson and spearhead. His strategy centred on realism, revenue and hardball negotiating. He knew Monaco were working within certain restraints and that copying PSG’s model simply wasn’t sustainable. “You need more than money and ambition,” he explained. “You need to be in a big town, to have a population around you, play in a big league. There are several elements which just don’t exist [here].” With a population of just 40,000 and the smallest crowds in Ligue 1, Monaco would have to do things differently. Continue reading...
